Partnership for the Preservation of the Printed Page ![]() Unchangeable...Uneditable...Uncensorable...For Future Generations Electronic book media is rapidly becoming the go-to choice of readers everywhere. It's cheap. It's convenient. It's portable. It's fun. And it's chic. But how do you know the 'book' you have on your electronic device is the same as the one purchased by your neighbor two months ago? Well, certainly it could have been improved. It could have been cleared of 'typos' and other annoying minor errors. But certainly no one would change any substance or content that mattered. Would they?
Well, of course not. But just the fact that you would ask that question raises the thorny issues of censorship, thought control, and re-writing history. Or what about a new administration in control of the country? Would they want you reading stuff in conflict with their policies? "Conspiracy theory!" you say. No. Not really. That implies a sinsiter design behind all this technology. We don't believe that at all. Our point is simply that with the advent of this technology, the ability to control what we read is easily accessed. And if it's that easy to access, is it possible, even probable that someone WOULD access and exercise that control? The good guys certainly wouldn't pursue such an evil end. But the bad guys would. And if the bad guys do, then the good guys have to counter with the same weapon. Soon Tom Sawyer is an atheist communist, and Karl Marx is the savior of the world. My exaggeration is designed to make a valid and irrefutable point: that electronic media can (and will) be manipulated. The 'actual' books on your bookshelf cannot. Join us. And help save the page! |
